Having searched in this World, I could not find anywhere an Ocean of mercy like You; O Consort of Lord Siva – auspicious Lord of holy Thiruvaiyaru – five rivers! You have been found or apprehended in my mental perception; will I forget You now? O Redeemer of the fallen! O Mother Dharmasamvardhani! You should protect me in the midst of others now, without taking into account the crimes committed by me so far, by granting me the wishes as required.

O Mother with Auspiciousness form who is the Consort of Lord Siva – wearer of digit of moon on the head like a jewel! O Mother Rajarajesvari (one of the names of Mother) who is the prop of the three Worlds (Heaven, Earth and Nether World)! O Lotus Eyed! people are not aware of Your mights; O Mother abiding in the hearts of the supreme devotees like Thyagaraja and others! O Mother Gauri! O Mother who is beyond all! O Queen of the Universe who governs this Universe without any apparent motive! O Mother Dharmasamvardhani! I trusted You totally; You should protect me whole- heartedly.
  • 1 kAvalasina kOrikalu – This may be translated as ‘whatever is required by me’ or ‘whatever is necessary for me’. In the former case, the devotee places the demands on the Mother; in the latter case, the devotee leaves it to the discretion of the Mother to confer such necessities as may be necessary to perform worship of the Mother without hindrance. Please refer to Kriti ‘vaddanE vAru lEru ’ wherein Sri Thyagaraja states ‘kOrikalilalO divilO koJcemaina lEni nA manasu ’ (… my mind which has no demands at all either in this World or the next…) and kriti ‘kanna talli nIvu ’ wherein Sri Thyagaraja states ‘anudinamonariJcu sat-kriyala nIkani palkina tyAgarAja rakSaki ’ (O Protector of Thyagaraja who surrendered all the pious tasks performed daily to be for Your sake…)
  • 2 pasiDi zilA kaJja sAyaka – From the context, it is clear that Sri Thyagaraja refers to ‘three distractions of the Worldly Existence’ - ‘wealth, land and women’. These are called ISaNa traya (wife, children and wealth – as per Telugu Dictionary) – Tamil ‘mUvAsai ’ – (land, gold and woman). Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa calls these ‘Kamini - Kanchan’ (women and gold). Therefore, the implied meanings of words ‘zilA ’ and ‘kaJja sAyaka ’ has been adopted.
  • 3 kaJja sAyaka – ‘kaJja ’ means ‘water born’ – Lotus. Lotus is one of the five flower arrows of Cupid.
  • 4 avyAjamunanu – there is no apparent motive for the paJca kRtya - five activities of Supreme Lord – projection (sRSTi ), sustenance (sthiti ) dissolution (laya ), concealment (tirOdAna ), beatitude (anugraha ); Therefore the Mother is called ‘paJca kRtya parAyaNa ’ and ‘avyAja karuNamUrti ’ in the Lalita Sahasranamam.
