O Lord Rama! In the Kali Yuga, is it possible for one to survive (escaping) without being enamoured, even in the innermost thoughts, by looking at - the nice hypocrisies, the beautiful garments (OR limbs and garments) and the front-locks of women? \t 3. O Lord Rama! In the Kali Yuga, is it possible for one to survive (escaping) (from the clutches of death), without worshipping the Lord praised by this Thyagaraja, whole-heartedly with Bhakti - the royal path - with flowers like jasmine – Jadi variety, jasmine, Mandara and Lotus?
  • 1 muppuna – This could be translated as ‘dangerous’ because ‘muppu ’ also means ‘danger’, ‘peril’ etc.; however, the form of the word (muppuna ) does not seem to be appropriate to be translated so. Therefore, it has been translated as ‘in the old age’.
  • 2 mAnagu, bAgagu – This is how it is given in all the books. Accordingly, these are to be split as ‘mAnu+agu’ - ‘bAgu+agu ’.
  • 3 aGga-vastra – this may also translated as two words ‘ aGga ’ – limbs and ‘vastra ’ – garments.
  • 4 rAja pathamucE – Please refer to Sri Thyagaraja’s Kriti ‘cakkani rAja mArga’ – rAga kharaharapriya where he states that devotion to Lord Sri Rama is the right royal path.
  • General – The first two charaNas describe the negative aspects to be avoided in order to survive the clutches of death; the last charaNa describes the positive aspect to be adopted to survive the clutches of death. The first two caraNas are equivalent to the typical advice of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa about ‘Kamini’ and ‘Kanchan’ (given in the reverse order in the Kriti here).
